Koh Samui  is the third largest of Thailand's islands, sitting in an archipelago of some 80 islands. The island is 25 km long and 21 km wide. The island has made a rapid move into the tourist industry over the years, with a mixture of fine hotels to beach huts to accommodate the visitor.
The island has long stretches of sandy beaches, all for those who just want to relax and soak up the sun. The busiest of which are located on the eastern coast at Hat Chaweng and Hat Lamai. Both resorts have the amenities for a whole range of watersports and are littered with plenty of tour operators to cater for your needs. Most of the island's nightlife is also centred around these two beaches.
For the more adventurous traveller, the island's interior has plenty of attractions to explore. There are two inland waterfalls at Na Muang and Hin Lad which both have crystal clear water and are perfect for a relaxing little dip. To get around the island motorcycles and jeeps can easily be hired at many places, or take a seat in one of the songthaews that go to all attractions.

Places of Attraction

Temple of the Big Buddha
The 12m high seated image sits on an island, linked by a short causeway, close to Bophut Beach.

Hin Lad Waterfall
Located about 3 km from Nathon and is easily accessible by foot from the town centre. Head south along Taweratphakdee Rd until you reach the hospital. Turn left here and about 2 km further on you will reach the entrance. The top of the waterfall is about another 30 minutes walk along a trail.

Na Muang Waterfall
Situated in the centre of the island, about 10km from Nathon. This fall has a 30 m drop, into a clear
pool which is great for swimming in.

Samui Butterfly Garden
There are displays of butterflies, insects and a few beehives. There is an also an observation platform for good views of the coast, along with a glass bottomed boat for viewing the underwater coral.

Family Zoo
Situated right next to the village of Mae Nam on highway 4169. As it is difficult to see any natural wildlife on the island, this is a perfect spot to get a look at the animals that exist on the island. There are king cobras, pythons, boa constrictor, crocodiles to the more friendly otters, monkeys and squirrels. There is a small admission charge of 50 baht. For those wanting to show off their braveness, photos can be taken with the boa draped casually around their necks.
